weaving fibre rush into antique chair.

The material used to weave this antique chair is called fibre rush. It’s made of paper, sizing and glue and twisted tightly for strength. It’s been used since the early 1900s. Because it is made of paper, use over decades means eventually the weaving will need to be replaced.

How it arrived. Notice the cardboard under the weave. It’s put there for comfort and also to soften the edge that the weave conforms to, in hopes of prolonging the life of the weave.

The weave is nearly complete. The space between the opposing edging needs to match closely, so stopping regularly to adjust and tighten the weave is important.
